Blackout Shades: What “Blackout” Actually Means — and the Edge-Gap Problem Nobody Talks About

Blackout fabric blocks essentially 100% of light. But here's the catch: light leaks around the edges — the gap between the shade and the window frame — not through the fabric. To achieve true darkness, the fabric choice and the installation method both matter. EaseEase blackout shades start from $106, all custom-width, all cordless. Not all products in this collection are blackout — see the guide below before choosing.

Total blackout

Honeycomb Shades, Roller Shades (blackout fabric), Double Roller Blinds, Day and Night Cellular Shades. Also: Roman Shades and Bamboo/Woven Wood Shades ordered with a blackout liner. Fabric blocks all light — install with an outside mount or side channels to minimize edge gaps.

Room darkening

Zebra Blinds and Shangri-La Sheer Shades significantly dim the room and block direct sightlines in closed mode, but are not lightproof. Roman Shades and Bamboo/Woven Wood Shades in light-filtering fabric also fall here.

Good to Know Before You Order

Three things to know before you choose:
  • The edge gap is where light really enters — even perfect blackout fabric will let light through the gap between the shade and the window frame. The solution: use an outside mount that extends at least 3 inches beyond the frame on all sides, and consider a valance to seal the top. Inside-mount shades in shallow frames will always have some edge leakage.
  • Roman shades, bamboo/woven wood shades, and linen roller shades all come in blackout, room-darkening, and light-filtering versions — the product name alone doesn't tell you which you're getting. Check the fabric/liner selector on each product page to confirm you're ordering the blackout version.
  • For truly pitch-black with zero edge leakage, only Roller Shades and Honeycomb Shades can get there — these are the only products that can be fitted with side channels that fully seal all four edges. All other blackout shades will block light through the fabric but leave a small gap at the frame.

Which Blackout Shade Is Right for You?

If your room is…

Bedroom / nursery (total darkness for sleep)

Day and Night Cellular Shades (totally blackout + 1.5" honeycomb insulation, from $250) or Double Cell Honeycomb Shades (blackout fabric + insulation, from $161). Both are the strongest blackout options in this collection.

If you only need…

Room darkening (not total blackout)

Zebra Blinds, Shangri-La Sheer Shades, Bamboo / Woven Wood Shades, or Roman Shades in a light-filtering fabric. All significantly dim the room and provide daytime privacy without total blackout.

If your priority is…

Blackout + thermal insulation

Day and Night Cellular Shades or Top-Down Bottom-Up Honeycomb Shades. Both combine blackout fabric with 1.5" air pockets that reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. From $166.

If your priority is…

Minimal clean look + blackout

Linen Roller Shades in blackout linen — the most streamlined aesthetic with a full blackout fabric option. Wall-to-wall clean profile. From $106.

If your priority is…

No drilling + blackout

No-Drill Honeycomb Shades or No-Drill Roller Blinds. Both use a tension bracket — no screws, no wall damage. Blackout fabric available on both. Up to 70" wide. From $116.

If your window is…

A skylight

Skylight Honeycomb Shades. Engineered for sloped ceiling installation with angled brackets and a locking cord — standard shades cannot be safely mounted overhead. Blackout cellular. From $225.

Preguntas frecuentes sobre Persianas opacas

Are all shades in this collection truly 100% blackout?

No. Solar Shades in this collection are UV-blocking, not blackout — they maintain your view while reducing glare. Bamboo and woven wood shades are room-darkening, not fully lightproof. For true blackout, choose cellular shades, roller shades with blackout fabric, roman shades with blackout liner, or double roller blinds.

Do blackout shades completely eliminate light, or does some still get in?

The blackout fabric itself blocks virtually 100% of light, but a small amount can enter through the gap between the shade and the window frame — not through the fabric. To minimize edge leakage: use an outside mount that extends at least 3 inches beyond the frame on all sides, add a valance at the top, or use side channels for an inside mount.

Which EaseEase blackout shade is best for a bedroom or nursery?

For total darkness and insulation: Day and Night Cellular Shades (1.5" blackout honeycomb, from $250). For blackout plus a daytime sheer option in one shade: Double Roller Blinds (from $238). For the most minimal look with blackout fabric: Linen Roller Shades (from $106). For no-drill installation: No-Drill Honeycomb Shades (from $116).

What is the difference between blackout and room-darkening shades?

Blackout shades use lightproof fabric that blocks essentially all light when closed — the room feels like nighttime. Room-darkening shades (like bamboo or woven wood) reduce light significantly and provide privacy, but are not fully opaque: some light filters through the natural fibers, leaving the room dim rather than dark. Choose blackout for nurseries, bedrooms, and media rooms; room-darkening when you want to reduce light without total darkness.

Do blackout shades help with insulation and energy savings?

Yes, especially cellular (honeycomb) blackout shades. The honeycomb air pockets create a thermal barrier at the window, reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. EaseEase Day and Night Cellular Shades use 1.5" double cell construction for the strongest insulation. Standard blackout roller and roman shades also reduce solar heat gain compared to light-filtering options.

Are EaseEase blackout shades available without drilling?

Yes. Both No-Drill Honeycomb Cellular Shades and No-Drill Roller Blinds mount with a tension bracket — no screws, no wall damage. Both are available with blackout fabric and sized up to 70" wide. They work for rental apartments, tile walls, and glass doors.

Can I get a blackout shade for a skylight or sloped ceiling?

Yes. EaseEase Skylight Honeycomb Shades are specifically engineered for overhead installation with angled mounting brackets and a locking cord that holds the shade securely against the slope. Standard shades cannot be safely mounted horizontally overhead. Starting from $225.

What is the lead time for EaseEase blackout shades?

Standard lead time is 5–7 business days. Expedited shipping (3–7 days) is available at checkout for an additional fee. All shades are custom-made to your exact measurements — no stock sizes are used.
