Three things about roller shades that catch first-time buyers off guard:

  • All roller shades offer three light-control tiers: sheer, light-filtering, and blackout — but not every product covers all three. Sheer (see-through): the Linen RT017 and Solar Shades in 3% and 5% openness let light and silhouettes through in both directions when there’s a brightness difference. Light-filtering (see light, not people): most linen and solar options in this range. Blackout (full block): available in linen roller shades and double roller blinds. Choose your tier based on privacy needs first, then style.
  • “Blackout fabric” doesn’t mean zero light — mounting style matters. Blackout roller shades block the fabric area completely, but inside-mount shades can leave small side gaps where light leaks around the edges of the cassette. EaseEase’s cassette includes a top brush strip to reduce this — but for the most complete blackout, use outside mount and extend the shade 1–2" beyond the window frame on each side.
  • No-drill options are available — if you’re renting, have tile walls, or simply don’t want to drill, EaseEase offers both No-Drill Roller Blinds (extra-wide, tension bracket) and No-Drill Solar Shades (waterproof + no-drill combined). No screws, no damage.

Are solar shades private at night?

No. Solar shades are semi-transparent. During the day, bright outdoor light means you can see out but neighbors cannot see in. After dark, when your interior lights are on, the effect reverses and your home becomes visible from outside. For nighttime privacy, choose linen roller shades (opaque fabric) or Double Roller Blinds which include a blackout layer you can deploy at night.

What is the difference between Double Roller Blinds and regular blackout roller shades?

Double Roller Blinds have two independent shades sharing one headrail: a sheer front layer for daytime soft light, and a full blackout rear layer for nighttime. Standard blackout roller shades have only one layer. Double Roller is the only style that switches between both modes without requiring two separate shade installations.

For the most complete blackout result, use outside mount and extend the shade 1-2 inches beyond the window frame on each side.
