FAQs about Blackout Curtains

What makes a good blackout curtain?

A good blackout curtain is designed to effectively block out light, but the level of darkness you need depends on your personal preferences. Some people desire a full 100% blackout effect for complete darkness, while others prefer to let a hint of natural light filter through, especially in the morning when they wake up.

That's why EASEEASE curtains provide tailored solutions to meet different needs:

  • Sheer curtains for living rooms create an airy and elegant look, allowing natural light to flow through.
  • Light-filtering curtains for living rooms block about 50% of light, reducing glare and making west-facing rooms more comfortable; when paired with a blackout lining, they can achieve 100% darkness.
  • Room darkening curtains for bedrooms block 90-95% of light, providing privacy while allowing a soft natural glow—ideal for those who prefer some light while sleeping.
  • Total blackout curtains for bedrooms completely eliminate all light and come in various colors, including white, perfect for those who need complete darkness for sleep.

The key is ensuring nighttime lights—like streetlights—are entirely blocked for an undisturbed sleep, and our EASEEASE curtains deliver just that.

How do blackout curtains work?

The fabric used in blackout curtains plays a vital role in determining their performance. At EASEEASE Curtains, our dim-out and blackout fabrics are expertly woven textiles, featuring a black yarn inserted between the two sides of the fabric. The level of blackout (ranging from 90% to 100%) depends on the color and structure of the material.

To make it easier for you to choose, we’ve categorized our curtains based on their performance:

  • Dim-Out Curtains: Light-colored options like eggshell or white block 90% to 95% of light, offering gentle room darkening.
  • 100% Total Blackout Curtains: For complete darkness, choose either a coated fabric curtain in any color or a blackout curtain in a dark shade.

Our EASEEASE 100% Total Blackout Curtains deliver unparalleled protection from sunlight with a full blackout effect, available across the entire color spectrum.

What blackout curtains are best for each room?

  • Blackout Curtains for Bedroom: Choose calming colours like blues, grays or purples to relax.
  • Blackout Curtain for Living Room: Beige, taupe, or warm grey create a cosy atmosphere. Thermal blackout curtains are especially beneficial during hot or cold weather.
  • Blackout Curtain for Kitchen: Lighter colours, like whites or light pastels, make the kitchen brighter.
  • Blackout Curtain for Office: Neutral shades like charcoal, navy, or green help focus. Minimalist designs or solid colours with a hint of texture look professional.

How are blackout curtains made? Are blackout curtains toxic?

EASEEASE curtains uses 2 kinds of fabric, a 100% textile fabric weaved with a black yarn or a 3-pass coated fabric.

The performances of each curtain, as explained in point 2, are determined by the fabric itself and eventually the color.

At EASEEASE we chose to use OEKO-TEX certified fabrics. OEKO-TEX is an independent testing and certification system for textile products that is recognized worldwide. The Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® takes into account if the curtain fabric has been produced without the use of any harmful substances, making our blackout curtains for bedroom eco-friendly.

How to maintain blackout curtains?

You don’t have to worry about our blackout curtains at all! EaseEase blackout curtains maintain the natural cozy texture while undergoing a high-temperature shaping process. Our memory training technique helps curtains hold their shape and pleats, ensuring a smooth, elegant look without the need for frequent ironing. This process instills a “memory” in the fabric, keeping your curtains pristine whether open or closed. No matter how many times you wash them, they won’t lose their shape.

Here are some considerations for our cotton curtains:

  1. Washing: EaseEase curtains are usually machine-washable, which makes cleaning them straightforward. Regular washing helps to keep them fresh and free from dust and allergens.
  2. Drying: It's recommended to air dry blackout curtains to prevent shrinkage. High heat should be avoided to maintain their size and shape.
  3. Maintenance Frequency: Depending on environmental factors like dust and moisture levels, our blackout curtains may need to be cleaned more or less frequently. Spot cleaning can be done for minor stains to avoid frequent washing.

Overall, even white blackout curtains are generally durable and easy to care for, making them a practical choice for many households.

Do blackout curtains keep heat out?

Yes! Blackout curtains can help keep heat out, but it mainly depends on the quality of the lining. High-quality thermal or blackout linings provide better insulation, blocking sunlight and reducing heat transfer. This helps keep rooms cooler in summer and retain warmth in winter for year-round comfort.

Can I wash blackout curtains?

Yes! At EaseEase, all our unlined blackout curtain fabrics are machine washable. Click here to check our cleaning guidelines.

  • If you chose a 90%-95% high-density blackout lining, it is also washable.
  • If you selected a 100% coated blackout lining, we recommend minimizing washes to prevent the coating from wearing off over time.

Always check the care instructions for the best cleaning method!

Do you have any recommended blackout curtains for the bedroom?

If you're using blackout curtains in the bedroom, I’d recommend heavyweight fabric over thinner options. Our best-seller is the Heavyweight Linen Blackout Curtains—a classic white linen blackout curtain that pairs beautifully with white-themed bedrooms. It has a rich texture, excellent drape, and comes in Morandi tones, making it a perfect match for gray, white, or cream walls.

Do you have any recommended white blackout curtains?

In the past few years, solid-colored and plain curtains have been the go-to choice, with white blackout curtains being especially popular. This year, textured designs like embossing and embroidery are trending. They maintain a subtle, elegant look that suits the modern minimalist style of most new homes in North America, while adding a touch of luxury and refinement.
