The 4 Challenges That Make French Door Shades Different
No Frame Depth
French door glass panels have little to no recess — outside mount on the door surface is almost always required. Inside mount is only possible with slim, door-specific brackets.
Door Handles in the Way
Standard shades hit the handle when lowered. You need a shade with a profile under 1″ — roller shades and honeycomb shades both clear most lever handles comfortably.
Shade Moves When Door Opens
Every time the door swings, the shade swings with it — unless hold-down brackets are used. These clip the bottom rail to the door and keep the shade flat and quiet.
Two Panels, Two Shades
Most French doors have two separate glass panels. Each panel needs its own shade — measure each independently, as the two panels are rarely identical in size.
- You want a full curtain drape look — long curtains covering the full door look beautiful but block the door from opening. Consider a side panel approach for a drapery effect without blocking movement.
- You need a true inside mount with deep recesses — most French doors have under ½″ of glass depth, too shallow for standard inside-mount brackets.
- You have decorative hardware over 1.5″ deep — oversized vintage knobs or antique pulls may need custom clearance. Contact our design team to verify before ordering.
Which French Door Shade Type Is Right for You?
| Shade Type | Handle Clearance | Blackout Option | Insulation | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roller Shades | ✓ Slim (<1″) | ✓ Yes | ◎ Moderate | Modern rooms, bedroom blackout, everyday use |
| Honeycomb / Cellular | ✓ Slim (<1″) | ✓ Yes | ✓ Best | Energy efficiency, cold climates, drafty patio doors |
| Roman Shades | ◎ Medium (1–2″) | ◎ Fabric yes, side gaps | ◎ Moderate | Decorative look, light filtering, dining rooms |
| Bamboo / Woven | ◎ Medium (1–2″) | ◎ Fabric yes, side gaps | ◎ Moderate | Natural texture, kitchens, sunrooms, boho style |
| Zebra / Day-Night | ✓ Slim (<1″) | ◎ Partial | ◎ Moderate | Flexible light control, living rooms, offices |
Which Shade Should You Choose for Your French Door?
Maximum blackout for a bedroom patio door
→ Choose Honeycomb Shades or Roller Shades in blackout fabric. Both profile under 1″ to clear handles, and both work with hold-down brackets to stay flat every time the door swings.
A natural, textured look for a kitchen or sunroom
→ Choose Bamboo / Woven Shades. They filter light beautifully, add organic warmth, and our mildew-resistant ramie construction handles kitchen and sunroom humidity with ease.
Privacy + daytime light with flexible control
→ Choose Zebra / Day-Night Shades. The alternating sheer and solid bands let you shift from full view to full privacy by simply rolling up or down — no trade-off between light and privacy needed.
How to Measure French Door Shades
Measure the glass only
Measure the glass panel width only — not the full door or wood frame. Take three readings (top, middle, bottom) and use the narrowest. Add 1–2″ each side for coverage, but confirm this won't reach your handle or lock.
Add mounting space top & bottom
Add 3–4″ above the glass for the top bracket. Add 2–3″ below the glass for the hold-down bracket position. This gives full glass coverage while keeping all hardware on the door surface, not the frame.
Check handle clearance
Measure the gap between the door surface and the back of your handle. If it's under 1″, choose roller or honeycomb shades — both profile under 1″. Roman and bamboo shades typically need 1.5–2″ of clearance.
