Three things about Roman shades that trip up first-time buyers:
  • Relaxed shades need manual reshaping after raising — the swooping curved hem doesn't return to shape on its own. Each time you raise a relaxed shade, you'll lightly hand-dress the fabric to reform the curve. This takes seconds, but it matters: if you raise and lower your shades frequently throughout the day, flat fold is more practical. Choose relaxed for windows where the shade stays mostly lowered.
  • Bold patterns and prints only look good on flat fold — hobbled and relaxed styles fold the fabric into loops and curves, which break up and distort any printed design.
