  • 01 Outside Mount

Window treatments for the door mostly will be mounted on the outside of the window because unlike regular windows, the French door window has no depth. It is important the window treatment you decide on can be mounted on the outside.

  • 02 Door Handles

Your door will most likely have a handle that might get in the way of operating the window treatment. The solution is to buy shallow blinds that fit comfortably between the door and decorative handles. Most 1” blinds, roller shades and honeycomb shades will fit behind the door handle, assuming there is a 1 inch clearance.

  • 03 Hold Down Brackets

When your window treatment is lowered, it may move when the door is opened and closed. To prevent this, use hold down brackets to keep the bottom of the blind or shade in place.

How to choose the Perfect Shades for Different Door Windows

French doors are one of the most sophisticated architectural elements you can have in your home. These double doors can be a beautiful gateway between rooms of your house, or serve as a frame to an outside patio or stunning view.

FAQs about French Door Shades

What is the difference between inside mount and outside mount for French door shades?

French doors have little to no glass depth so outside mount is almost always required — the shade mounts on the door surface above the glass, not inside the frame.

Do I need hold-down brackets for French door shades?

Yes, if your door opens frequently. Hold-down brackets clip the bottom rail to the door, preventing it from swinging when the door moves.

How do I measure for French door shades?

Measure only the glass panel — not the full door. Add 1–2" each side for width coverage and 3–4" above the glass for the top bracket. Check that the extra width doesn't reach your door handle or lock.

Will the shades block my door handle?

Roller shades and honeycomb shades profile under 1" and clear most lever handles. Roman shades need 1.5–2" of clearance — measure the gap between your door surface and the back of the handle before ordering.

Which shade is best for a French door bedroom that needs full blackout?

Roller shades in blackout fabric or blackout honeycomb cellular shades offer the most complete light blocking. Both profile under 1" to clear door handles and work with hold-down brackets to stay flat when the door swings.
