How to Dress Triangle, Arched & Odd-Shaped Windows

How to dress arched windows and odd shaped windows with custom window treatments

Arched, triangular, and other odd-shaped windows add real character to a home — but they also take more thought to dress well. Standard, off-the-shelf window treatments are built for square and rectangular openings, so an arched or triangle window almost always needs a custom solution to look tailored and work properly.

This guide walks through the three treatments that actually fit odd-shaped windows — custom curtains, honeycomb (cellular) shades, and custom shutters — with real case videos for arched, triangle, and extra-wide trapezoid windows, plus how to measure them and how to choose between them.

Common Challenges for Odd-Shaped Windows

  1. Standard curtains and blinds don't fit. There's no common size for an arch or a triangle, so custom-made treatments are almost always necessary.
  2. Light control and privacy are harder to achieve. Irregular shapes make it difficult to block or filter light evenly, especially near angled edges and points.
  3. Installation is more complex. Special tracks, apex mounts, or bespoke fittings are often required, and measuring has to be more precise than for a normal window.
Common Types of Odd-Shaped Windows

The good news: with the right product and accurate measurements, every one of these windows can be dressed beautifully. Here are your three best options — and if you'd rather skip straight to a made-to-fit answer, our design team can help with any shape.

Solution 1: Custom-Made Curtains

Custom curtains are the most design-forward way to soften an odd-shaped window. Their biggest strength is beauty — the fabric adds warmth, texture, and a sense of height that hard treatments can't match. The trade-off to understand upfront: on a fixed arch or triangle, curtains can't slide open and closed like a normal panel — they're tied back into a shape. That makes them ideal for living rooms and light, airy sheer looks, and less ideal when a bedroom needs full blackout (more on that below).

For Arched Windows

Install curtains within the arched frame itself for a sleek, integrated look. The curtains follow the curve of the arch, giving a polished finish without overwhelming the space.

For windows that combine triangular and arched shapes, three layers of curtains work well — each layer tailored to a different segment of the window so the whole opening reads as one cohesive treatment.

For Triangle Windows

Triangle windows with a pointed top can be dressed by installing a curtain track at the apex and hanging the curtain from there, then tying it back to one side for a graceful, asymmetric drape.

If the triangle window sits above a sliding door, treat the two separately for a cleaner, more practical result — a fixed drape on the triangle and an operable treatment below.

One honest caveat for bedrooms: if you use drapery on a triangle window for full blackout, the fabric has to bunch and layer along the angled edge, which makes the edge look heavy and bulky. For bedrooms that need true darkness, we usually recommend honeycomb shades instead.

Solution 2: Honeycomb (Cellular) Shades

Custom honeycomb shades are the most popular and most forgiving option for odd-shaped windows. They can be shaped to fit curved or angular openings precisely, come in sheer to full blackout opacities, and their honeycomb air pockets give them excellent insulation against heat, cold, and even sound. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy reports that well-fitted cellular shades can cut heat loss through windows by up to 40% and reduce unwanted solar heat gain by up to 60%. They're also the most flexible on control: manual cord, motorized, and smart-home compatible — including top-down operation. Below are real installs from our customers.

Motorized honeycomb shades are a popular upgrade for windows mounted high and out of reach — operate them by remote or phone app and integrate them with your smart-home system.

Arched & Semi-Circle Windows — Top-Down Motorized

Honeycomb shades can be embedded directly into a curved frame, following the arch for a clean, tailored finish that still raises and lowers. This semi-circle window uses a top-down motorized honeycomb shade.

Triangle Windows — Manual Cord Control

A standard triangle window takes a single custom honeycomb shade that raises and lowers on a manual cord, hugging the angled edge as it opens and closes. It seals the gaps and uneven edges people fear most on triangle windows, and it can be built as full blackout for a bedroom or light-filtering for a living room. Here's a manual-control demo on an extra-wide triangle. For a triangle-only deep dive, see our guide to triangle window shades.

Extra-Large Triangle Windows — Two Panels Joined

When a triangle window is very large, we build it as two honeycomb panels joined together — each half tracks its own angled edge so it operates smoothly and hangs evenly, while reading as one continuous surface.

Trapezoid Windows — Top-Down Motorized

A narrow-top, wide-bottom trapezoid window works beautifully with a top-down motorized honeycomb shade, giving you light from the top while keeping privacy below.

Extra-Wide Trapezoid Windows — Single or Joined Panels

A single honeycomb shade covers widths up to 118 inches. If your window is wider than 118 inches — say a 300-inch span — we build it as multiple panels made side by side so each section operates smoothly and the whole window stays even. Below: an extra-wide trapezoid as a single shade, and another built from three joined panels.

For some odd shapes, a fixed honeycomb panel set into an aluminum frame is the cleanest solution — especially for sunroom and gable windows.

How to Measure for Honeycomb Shades on Odd-Shaped Windows

  1. Measure the base width at the bottom of the window.
  2. Measure the length of each sloped or curved side.
  3. Measure each angle where the sides meet (a laser measure or angle finder helps).
  4. Note the frame depth if you're mounting inside the recess.
  5. For an extra-wide span over 118 inches, decide the split points for a multi-panel build in advance.

Honeycomb shades are forgiving on tolerance, but accurate angles still matter. Not sure how to measure? Send us a photo of your window and our design team will handle it.

How to Install Honeycomb Shades on an Odd-Shaped Window

Custom honeycomb shades for odd-shaped windows install much like standard ones — the headrail sits along the top (the level edge), so you mount to that straight top rather than the angled sides. Basic steps:

  1. Hold the shade up in the opening to check clearance and depth before drilling.
  2. Position the L-brackets along the top rail, about 3 inches in from each side; add a middle bracket on wider shades. Mark and pre-drill the holes.
  3. Check the brackets are level and shim if needed — level mounting is essential for smooth operation.
  4. Screw the L-brackets into place through the top holes (use wall anchors on drywall).
  5. Snap the shade in: insert the front of the headrail into the bracket clip, then push the back edge up until it clicks into place.

Motorized shades follow the same bracket-and-snap process, with a rechargeable or wired motor already fitted in the headrail. For a fixed aluminum-framed panel, the frame is secured directly into the window recess. Prefer not to DIY? We can arrange professional in-home installation.

Solution 3: Custom Shutters

Custom shutters are crafted to fit the exact dimensions of your window in a range of finishes, and they fit virtually any shape — triangle, arched, trapezoid and beyond. They deliver strong, infinitely adjustable light control, privacy, and durability, and can even run on solar-powered motorization — a great fit for high or hard-to-reach angled windows.

Two things to know before you choose shutters: they require millimeter-precise measurement (a small error shows), and they cost more than the other options. And in a bedroom, the louvers and frame let in slight light leakage — shutters cannot achieve 100% blackout. They're the right pick when you value adjustable light and architectural style over total darkness.

Which Treatment Should You Choose?

All three fit odd-shaped windows — here's how they actually compare on the decisions that matter most.

Custom Linen Curtains Honeycomb Shades Custom Shutters
Best for Living rooms & soft, airy ambiance Bedrooms & living rooms; nearly any shape Architectural spaces that want adjustable light
Blackout Limited — edges bunch heavily on angles Yes — sheer to full blackout No — slight leakage, never 100%
Insulation Moderate Excellent (honeycomb air pockets) Good
Light adjustment Fixed / tie-back only Raise & lower, incl. top-down Infinite louver tilt
Operation Tied into shape (not operable) Manual cord, motorized & smart Tilt louvers; solar-motor option
Measuring Forgiving Forgiving Millimeter-precise required
Relative price $–$$ (by fabric) $$ (motor +$100–$219) $$$ (highest)
Watch-out Can't slide open; bulky if blackout Over 118 in wide needs joined panels Costly; strict measuring; not full blackout

Bottom line: for most bedrooms and hard-to-reach angled windows, honeycomb shades give the best mix of blackout, insulation, and easy motorized control. Choose shutters when you want to fine-tune light all day and love the architectural look, and linen curtains when the goal is a soft, airy living-room feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put curtains or blinds on an odd-shaped window?

Yes. Off-the-shelf treatments won't fit, but custom curtains, honeycomb (cellular) shades, and custom shutters are all made to fit arched, triangle, and other odd-shaped windows.

What is the best window treatment for a triangle window?

Custom honeycomb shades are the most popular — they insulate well, offer blackout or light-filtering options, forgive small measuring errors, and come in manual or motorized versions.

Can shades on an odd-shaped window go up and down?

Honeycomb shades raise and lower with a manual cord or motor, including top-down operation. Curtains on a fixed arch or triangle are tied back rather than slid open, and some honeycomb panels are fixed within an aluminum frame.

How wide can a honeycomb shade be made?

Up to 118 inches as a single shade, and up to 139 inches tall. For wider spans — for example 300 inches — we build multiple panels side by side.

Can you get full blackout on an arched or triangle window?

Honeycomb shades can be made as full blackout. Curtains can darken a room but bunch heavily at angled edges, and shutters look great and adjust light freely but leak slightly and can't reach 100% blackout.

How much does motorization add?

Motorized honeycomb shades run roughly $100–$219 more than the manual cord version.
