To be clear, the lesson isn't "all coatings are evil" — it's that coating quality varies enormously, and there's a simple way to tell the difference. The structural risk comes when a mediocre coating is bonded directly to your face fabric: heat, light and washing all attack that bonded interface, and when it fails, the whole curtain is finished — the face fabric may be perfectly fine, yet it goes to landfill along with the coating.

- Separate fabric lining. The blockout layer is a separate piece of fabric sewn behind the face curtain, attached along the sides with the bottom left unsewn. The lining does the light-blocking, insulating and UV-shielding — it takes the sun instead of your face fabric. One caveat: the lining construction alone is no guarantee.
