Smart Back Clips for Neat Folding

Tired of fixing wrinkled roman shades? Not here!

We added clever clips in the back that "pinch" the fabric as it lifts — so your Roman shades fold up neatly every time. No smoothing needed.

Roman Shade Dimensions Worth Knowing

8–13″

Stack height when raised

When raised, fabric stacks at the top of the window. Taller shades and pleated fabrics stack higher; decorative trim also adds height.

7–9″

Fold (panel) spacing

Spacing between folds adjusts with shade height. The bottom fold is approximately 4″.

4-10″

Valance height

Standard valance is about 4″ and can be customized up to 10″. Waterfall and top-down bottom-up styles use an approximately 4-6″ rear cover.

2″

Minimum inside-mount depth

Cordless tracks are about 1½″ deep and top-down bottom-up tracks about 1¼″, so a 2″ recess fits these styles. Motorized tracks are about 2⅜″ deep; approximately 2½″ of mounting depth is recommended.

  • Fold spacing ≈ 7–9", bottom hem ≈ 4"

  • Fully raised, the stack is about 8–13" tall

Good to Know Before You Order

Three things about Roman shades that trip up first-time buyers:

  • Due to shipping, the pleats of the hobbled Roman shades may be flattened. For a fuller, fluffier look, please steam or iron them upon receipt.
  • Relaxed shades need manual reshaping after raising — the swooping curved hem doesn’t return to shape on its own. Each time you raise a relaxed shade, you’ll lightly hand-dress the fabric to reform the curve. This takes seconds, but it matters: if you raise and lower your shades frequently throughout the day, flat fold is more practical. Choose relaxed for windows where the shade stays mostly lowered.
  • Bold patterns and prints only look good on flat fold — hobbled and relaxed styles fold the fabric into loops and curves, which break up and distort any printed design. If you love the Striped Roman Shades or French Embroidery Patterned Shades, flat fold is the correct style — the pattern remains uninterrupted across the full width of the window.
  • Top-Down Bottom-Up is available in both the Cordless Linen Roman Shade (Flat Fold) and the Hobbled TDBU Roman Shade — lets you lower from the top for overhead light while blocking street-level sightlines, or raise from the bottom as a standard shade.

FAQs about Roman Shades

What is the difference between flat fold, plain fold, relaxed, and hobbled Roman shades?

Flat fold hangs smooth and flat when lowered — best for patterns and frequent raising/lowering. Plain fold has evenly spaced horizontal folds that stay visible when lowered, for a structured, tailored look. Relaxed fold has a gentle curved hem that requires light hand-shaping after raising. Hobbled (soft fold) features cascading fabric loops that create a layered, traditional look even when fully lowered.

Do relaxed Roman shades really need reshaping every time you raise them?

Yes — the swooping curved hem does not reform on its own after raising. You need to lightly hand-dress the fabric each time to restore the curved shape. This takes seconds, but matters: if you raise and lower your shades frequently throughout the day, flat fold is more practical. Choose relaxed for windows where the shade mostly stays lowered.

Can I get Roman shades with a top-down bottom-up feature?

Yes — top-down bottom-up is available on most of our Roman shades: Natural Linen, Classic Striped, French Embroidery, Butter Yellow, Natural Linen Top Down Bottom Up, and Hobbled. Lower the shade from the top for daylight while keeping street-level privacy, or raise it from the bottom like a standard shade. It is not available on the Custom Cordless Relaxed Roman Shade or the corded Soft Sheer Roman Shade.

Are patterned or striped Roman shades available, and which fold style shows patterns best?

Yes — EaseEase offers Classic Striped, Butter Yellow Striped, and French Embroidery Patterned Roman Shades. Flat fold shows patterns best, since nothing interrupts the design across the full window width. Plain fold and Relaxed are also available on these styles, but their folds and curves will break up the pattern more.

What is the difference between sheer Roman shades and light-filtering Roman shades?

Sheer Roman shades use translucent fabric that diffuses light softly while maintaining daytime privacy — you see a warm glow, not direct sunlight. Light-filtering shades use a denser woven fabric that significantly reduces brightness and glare while still allowing some ambient light through. Neither provides blackout; choose blackout lining if you need full darkness.

Are EaseEase Roman shades cordless and child-safe?

Yes — all EaseEase Roman shades are cordless except the Soft Sheer Roman Shade (which is corded). Cordless operation meets child and pet safety standards and keeps the window looking clean with no dangling cord. The cordless lift system raises and lowers smoothly with a gentle push or pull.

What is the lead time for custom Roman shades from EaseEase?

EaseEase custom Roman shades ship in 5 to 7 business days. Expedited shipping options are available at checkout. All shades are made to your exact measurements after order placement — measure carefully before ordering, as custom shades cannot be returned for sizing issues.

Should Roman shades be inside mounted or outside mounted?

Inside mount gives a clean, built-in look but requires a minimum window recess depth. Outside mount covers the full frame, reduces side light gaps, and makes small windows appear larger. For blackout versions, outside mount extending 1 to 2 inches beyond the frame on each side provides the most complete light block.
