Do I measure the window or the rod?
The rod or track, not the window. Curtain width is driven by the length of hardware the fabric has to cover, plus fullness, plus the returns at each end. Measuring the glass is the most common reason a finished curtain arrives too narrow.
How much wider than the window should the rod be?
Enough that the stacked fabric clears the glass when the curtains are open, which is usually 15 to 25 cm beyond the frame on each side. On a blackout installation, going wider also closes the side light gap.
Can I machine wash custom curtains?
It depends entirely on the fabric and the lining. Coated blackout linings and woven wood shades should never go in a machine, while many plain cottons and linens can, on a cold gentle cycle. Check the care guidance for your fabric before washing anything you cannot replace.
