No. Our velvet is made for modern living — simply machine wash cold and hang to air dry, and the pile keeps its soft, plush hand. Avoid hot water, tumble drying and ironing directly on the pile (steam lightly from the back if needed). Hang the panels back up while still slightly damp and the velvet naturally regains its smooth, structured drape without drying out or going stiff.

Velvet is more fade-resistant than lightweight fabrics thanks to its dense pile, so it holds up better under strong sun. For darker colours — which can show fading more over time under harsh west-facing sun — we recommend adding a blackout lining to protect the velvet face and keep the colour rich for longer.

Velvet drapes have a dense, heavy weave that makes them one of the best curtain fabrics for comfort: they insulate by blocking drafts and holding warmth, and their thickness absorbs ambient sound. For a street-facing bedroom they noticeably soften outside noise — most effective hung floor-to-ceiling and wider than the window, with a lining and a generous 2x or more fullness. Note that velvet dampens and reduces noise rather than fully soundproofing the room.
