What Are Velvet Curtains Good For?

Velvet curtains are the best choice when you need deep light control, warmth, and acoustic comfort — all in one fabric. The dense pile absorbs sound to quiet a room, traps warmth to cut heating bills, and delivers a richly layered look linen or cotton simply cannot match. EaseEase velvet comes custom-made in 55+ colours across three distinct finishes, each engineered for a different room goal — see which one is right for you below.

Good to Know Before You Order

Velvet is not the right choice if you want:
  • A bright, airy room — velvet absorbs light rather than diffusing it. Layer with sheer curtains if you want both warmth and daytime light.
  • No-drill or very lightweight hardware — velvet is heavier than most fabrics and requires a sturdy rod or ceiling track with proper wall anchors.
  • Light-Reflective velvet in high-traffic areas — the sheen finish shows fingerprints and marks more readily; High-Matte or Soft-Sheen are more forgiving in busy family rooms.

Good news for pet owners: EaseEase velvet is engineered to resist cat scratching and daily wear — and attracts less pet hair than loose-weave fabrics. A quick monthly vacuum with a soft brush keeps panels pristine.

Which Velvet Finish Is Right for You?

If your priority is…

Complete darkness & quiet

→ Choose High-Matte Velvet. The non-reflective pile absorbs light and sound most aggressively — ideal for bedrooms, nurseries, and home theaters where zero light bleed matters.

If your priority is…

Everyday elegance, any room

→ Choose Soft-Sheen Velvet. A subtle, balanced sheen that works in living rooms, dining rooms, and home offices — versatile enough to suit both modern and traditional interiors.

If your priority is…

Drama & a statement look

→ Choose Light-Reflective Velvet. A luminous, opulent shimmer that catches the light and elevates any room into a glamorous feature space. Best in jewel tones: emerald, sapphire, burgundy.

Still unsure? Browse our High-Matte and Soft-Sheen panels — both available in 55+ custom colours.

Velvet Drapes: The EaseEase Design Guide

Many clients ask us if velvet drapes are "too heavy" or "too high-maintenance." The truth? With our modern velvet collection, it's actually one of the most practical and sophisticated choices you can make. Here is how we balance aesthetics and utility:

  • Engineered for Smooth Movement

We have carefully calibrated the weight of our velvet to achieve the perfect balance: enough substance for a rich, luxurious drape, but not so heavy that it strains your hardware. Our curtains are specifically engineered to pair seamlessly with our Heavy-duty Rods and Tracks, ensuring an effortless, silent, and smooth glide every time you open or close them.

  • Superior Thermal & Acoustic Performance

Experience the performance benefits of premium velvet. Beyond its striking aesthetic, our velvet acts as a natural insulation and acoustic barrier. It effectively helps regulate your living room temperature by blocking drafts in the winter, while simultaneously absorbing ambient noise to create a quieter, more intimate, and truly "cozy" atmosphere.

  • Luxurious high-matte velvet home theater curtains in deep black with superior sound insulation and thermal control

    Easy-Care Maintenance

Forget the myth that velvet is high-maintenance. Our drapes are crafted for modern living and are far more resilient than traditional fabrics:

    • Wrinkle-Resistant: Unlike linen, our high-quality finish stays smooth and polished.
    • Easy Dusting: Keeps pristine with a quick monthly pass of a soft vacuum brush.
    • Machine Washable: Simply wash cold and hang dry—they naturally regain their structured form.

FAQs about Velvet Curtains

Do velvet curtains show a big colour difference under different lighting?

Yes, a little. Velvet’s pile catches and reflects light differently depending on the angle and time of day, so the same colour can look richer or lighter through the day — this is part of velvet’s signature depth, not a flaw. Because the effect depends on your room’s light, we strongly recommend ordering free fabric swatches first, so you can see the exact shade in your own space — morning and evening — before you order.

After washing, will the velvet pile feel dry or stiff?

No. Our velvet is made for modern living — simply machine wash cold and hang to air dry, and the pile keeps its soft, plush hand. Avoid hot water, tumble drying and ironing directly on the pile (steam lightly from the back if needed). Hang the panels back up while still slightly damp and the velvet naturally regains its smooth, structured drape without drying out or going stiff.

My windows get harsh west-facing sun — will velvet curtains fade within a year or two?

Velvet is more fade-resistant than lightweight fabrics thanks to its dense pile, so it holds up better under strong sun. For darker colours — which can show fading more over time under harsh west-facing sun — we recommend adding a blackout lining to protect the velvet face and keep the colour rich for longer.

Are velvet curtains sound-absorbing and insulating — can they cut street noise in a bedroom?

Yes. Velvet drapes have a dense, heavy weave that makes them one of the best curtain fabrics for comfort: they insulate by blocking drafts and holding warmth, and their thickness absorbs ambient sound. For a street-facing bedroom they noticeably soften outside noise — most effective hung floor-to-ceiling and wider than the window, with a lining and a generous 2x or more fullness. Note that velvet dampens and reduces noise rather than fully soundproofing the room.

Are velvet curtains suitable for a Ripple Fold heading, or is the fabric too stiff for neat waves?

Yes. Although velvet is heavier than linen or cotton, our velvet is weight-calibrated to drape rather than stiffen, so it forms soft, even waves and glides smoothly on a track — we pair it with heavy-duty ripple fold track so the waves stay uniform. If you prefer a more structured, tailored look, velvet also works beautifully in pinch pleat.

What's the difference between High-Matte, Soft-Sheen and Light-Reflective velvet?

High-Matte absorbs light for the deepest, calmest look — ideal for bedrooms and home theaters. Soft-Sheen has a subtle, balanced sheen that suits most living rooms. Light-Reflective has a luminous, opulent shimmer for glamorous, dramatic spaces. All three are the same plush velvet, just with different surface finishes.

Are velvet curtains good for blackout or a home theater?

Yes. Velvet's dense pile is naturally room-darkening, and a High-Matte finish absorbs the most light for a dim, cinema-like room. For true blackout, add a blackout lining and hang the panels floor-to-ceiling and wider than the window so light cannot leak around the edges.

What rod or track do velvet curtains need?

Because velvet is a heavier fabric, it needs a sturdy, heavy-duty rod or track. Our velvet is weight-calibrated to glide smoothly on our heavy-duty rods and tracks, so panels open and close silently without straining the hardware.
