  • 01 Outside Mount

Window treatments for the door mostly will be mounted on the outside of the window because unlike regular windows, the French door window has no depth. It is important the window treatment you decide on can be mounted on the outside.

  • 02 Door Handles

Your door will most likely have a handle that might get in the way of operating the window treatment. The solution is to buy shallow blinds that fit comfortably between the door and decorative handles. Most 1” blinds, roller shades and honeycomb shades will fit behind the door handle, assuming there is a 1 inch clearance.

  • 03 Hold Down Brackets

When your window treatment is lowered, it may move when the door is opened and closed. To prevent this, use hold down brackets to keep the bottom of the blind or shade in place.

FAQs about French Door Shades

How are French door shades different from regular window shades?

French door shades are made to fit glass doors perfectly. They’re slim, won’t block handles, and can be installed with no-drill options. They stay in place when the door moves and offer a clean, custom look—ideal for doors, unlike standard window shades.

Which type of French door shades should I choose?

Great question! The best choice depends on several factors:

1, determine whether an inside or outside mount works better—this depends on the shape of your window and the depth of the door frame.

2, consider the look and feel you want. Different shade types offer different light control, insulation, and ambiance—for example, honeycomb shades offer great insulation, while sheer shades create a soft, elegant glow.

What should I keep in mind when measuring for French door shades?

When measuring for French door shades, be sure to measure only the glass area, not the full door frame. If blackout isn’t required, you usually only need to add extra space to the top and bottom—adding too much to the sides can block door handles or locks, so take note of their position.

My bedroom glass door needs full blackout. Which shades do you recommend?

For full blackout, we recommend shades that fit very close to the glass, such as roller shades or honeycomb shades. Roman shades tend to have more light gaps and may not block light as completely.

Can French door shades help with insulation and energy savings?

Yes! Many French door shades, especially honeycomb (cellular) shades, provide excellent insulation by trapping air in their cells. This helps keep your room warmer in winter and cooler in summer, reducing energy costs while enhancing comfort.
