Three things about roller shades that catch first-time buyers off guard:
  • All roller shades offer three light-control tiers: sheer, light-filtering, and blackout — but not every product covers all three. Sheer (see-through): the Linen RT017 and Solar Shades in 3% and 5% openness let light and silhouettes through in both directions when there's a brightness difference. Light-filtering (see light, not people): most linen and solar options in this range. Blackout (full block): available in linen roller shades and double roller blinds. Choose your tier based on privacy needs first, then style.
  • “Blackout fabric” doesn't mean zero light — mounting style matters. Blackout roller shades block the fabric area completely, but inside-mount shades can leave small side gaps where light leaks around the edges of the cassette.
