Extra Long & Extra Wide Curtains: Two Different Problems, One Solution

Most retailers stop at 84". EaseEase makes panels to any drop (up to 180") and any width — fully custom, no upcharge. But beyond 106" in drop or 118" in width, fabric panels must be seam-joined to reach the required size. The technique behind that join is the most important thing to understand when ordering at this scale — it determines whether the seam is invisible or visible from across the room.

Problem 1

Extra Long — panels over 106” drop (9 ft ceilings and above)

Standard fabric bolts typically top out at 106”–118” in height. For 9-foot or taller ceilings, the panel requires a vertical seam join — an extra width of fabric sewn alongside the main panel to reach the full drop. Most factories leave a flat-sewn seam that is clearly visible, especially on sheers and linens. EaseEase uses an inverted pleat joining technique that hides the seam inside the pleat fold — invisible from the front on any fabric type.

Problem 2

Extra Wide — panels over 118” width (10 ft windows and above)

Standard fabric bolt widths are typically 54”–60”. For panels wider than 118”, multiple fabric widths must be joined side by side. The same inverted pleat technique keeps every join hidden in the folds. For extra-wide spans, rod and track selection is equally critical — standard adjustable rods sag across wide openings, and small curtain runners can catch at fabric seam points and cause uneven glide.

Hoe Onze Gordijnen Onzichtbare Naden Verbinden

  • Horizontale naadverbinding ❌

Good to Know Before You Order

Weight and smooth operation — the two things most buyers underestimate at this size:
  • Extra-wide panels need the right rod — standard adjustable rods sag across wide spans, and their small runners can catch and jam at fabric seam joints in extra-wide panels. For panels wider than 118”, use our Extra Sliding Curtain Rod — a traverse-style system with larger, heavy-duty runners that glide smoothly across seam joins and support full panel weight without centre sag. Standard traverse rods and most small-runner tracks are not rated for this application.
  • Extra-tall panels are easier with a motorized rail — manually pulling a 120”–180” panel from floor level creates uneven wear on the header over time. Our electric curtain rail handles large, heavy panels silently and opens or closes with a remote or app. Recommended for 10-foot ceilings and above.

Veelgestelde vragen over Extra brede en extra lange gordijnen

At what ceiling height do I need extra-long curtains?

At 9 feet (108") and above. Standard 84" panels will look proportionally short on a 9-foot wall. EaseEase makes custom-length panels to any drop up to 180" — order the length that reaches your floor based on your hardware type (rod, ultra-thin track, or regular track).

At what window width do I need extra-wide curtain panels?

When a single panel needs to exceed 118" in width. At this point, standard fabric bolt widths are exhausted and seam joining is required. EaseEase uses an inverted pleat technique to hide all joins inside the pleat fold — invisible from the front on any fabric type.

What curtain rod is best for extra-wide curtains?

The Extra Sliding Curtain Rod — a traverse-style system with large-format, heavy-duty runners. Standard adjustable rods sag on spans wider than 72" and their small runners jam at fabric seam joints in extra-wide panels. For very large spans, a ceiling-mount track with a centre support is also a clean option.

How do I calculate the right curtain length for my ceiling height?

For a curtain rod: ceiling height in inches minus 4". For an ultra-thin track: minus 1". For a regular track: minus 1.5". These give a kiss-the-floor finish. Add 1–3" for a gentle break, or 6–12" for a puddle. Always measure from the bottom of your ring or glider to the floor, not from the window top.

Do extra-long or extra-wide curtains have a visible seam?

Only if made with flat-sewn horizontal joins, which most factories use. EaseEase uses vertical inverted pleat seam joining — the seam is tucked inside the pleat fold and invisible from the front, even on sheers and linens.
