Blackout Shades: What “Blackout” Actually Means — and the Edge-Gap Problem Nobody Talks About
Blackout fabric blocks essentially 100% of light. But here's the catch: light leaks around the edges — the gap between the shade and the window frame — not through the fabric. To achieve true darkness, the fabric choice and the installation method both matter. EaseEase blackout shades start from $106, all custom-width, all cordless. Not all products in this collection are blackout — see the guide below before choosing.
Total blackout
Honeycomb Shades, Roller Shades (blackout fabric), Double Roller Blinds, Day and Night Cellular Shades. Also: Roman Shades and Bamboo/Woven Wood Shades ordered with a blackout liner. Fabric blocks all light — install with an outside mount or side channels to minimize edge gaps.
Room darkening
Zebra Blinds and Shangri-La Sheer Shades significantly dim the room and block direct sightlines in closed mode, but are not lightproof. Roman Shades and Bamboo/Woven Wood Shades in light-filtering fabric also fall here.
Good to Know Before You Order
- The edge gap is where light really enters — even perfect blackout fabric will let light through the gap between the shade and the window frame. The solution: use an outside mount that extends at least 3 inches beyond the frame on all sides, and consider a valance to seal the top. Inside-mount shades in shallow frames will always have some edge leakage.
- Roman shades, bamboo/woven wood shades, and linen roller shades all come in blackout, room-darkening, and light-filtering versions — the product name alone doesn't tell you which you're getting. Check the fabric/liner selector on each product page to confirm you're ordering the blackout version.
- For truly pitch-black with zero edge leakage, only Roller Shades and Honeycomb Shades can get there — these are the only products that can be fitted with side channels that fully seal all four edges. All other blackout shades will block light through the fabric but leave a small gap at the frame.
Which Blackout Shade Is Right for You?
Bedroom / nursery (total darkness for sleep)
→ Day and Night Cellular Shades (totally blackout + 1.5" honeycomb insulation, from $250) or Double Cell Honeycomb Shades (blackout fabric + insulation, from $161). Both are the strongest blackout options in this collection.
Room darkening (not total blackout)
→ Zebra Blinds, Shangri-La Sheer Shades, Bamboo / Woven Wood Shades, or Roman Shades in a light-filtering fabric. All significantly dim the room and provide daytime privacy without total blackout.
Blackout + thermal insulation
→ Day and Night Cellular Shades or Top-Down Bottom-Up Honeycomb Shades. Both combine blackout fabric with 1.5" air pockets that reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. From $166.
Minimal clean look + blackout
→ Linen Roller Shades in blackout linen — the most streamlined aesthetic with a full blackout fabric option. Wall-to-wall clean profile. From $106.
No drilling + blackout
→ No-Drill Honeycomb Shades or No-Drill Roller Blinds. Both use a tension bracket — no screws, no wall damage. Blackout fabric available on both. Up to 70" wide. From $116.
A skylight
→ Skylight Honeycomb Shades. Engineered for sloped ceiling installation with angled brackets and a locking cord — standard shades cannot be safely mounted overhead. Blackout cellular. From $225.
All EaseEase blackout shades are custom-width. Lead time 5–7 days. → Read our full guide: Bedroom Blackout Shades
